this weekend we had a great experiential gathering at Mosaic. God, movement, participation and engagement were all present. here is one of the readings that everyone was moved by. enjoy the read!

Stones

If we could all just stop throwing stones,
and stoop,
knees bent-
and write in the dust,
we’d see that the dust
was once stone -
grand, and hard, and proud, and tough -
now ground and dissolved in grace and tears.

So… how much better to be a grain of dirt on that kind prophet’s hands than a stone in the cold, accusing Temple of the pure.

unpacking fear

a good, challenging and insightful friend, Jim Palmer is sharing in the conversation at Mosaic on October 21st. i am really looking forward to hanging out with a friend and having others that i love so much taking in his thoughts, and wisdom….for a taste i have included an excerpt from Jim;s blog

unpacking fear
Jim September 27th, 2007

last night a few of us fleshed out rick’s thought that fear is often the result of misplaced dependency, which are ways we seek identity, purpose, love, identity, acceptance, life, worth, security, meaning, value, happiness outside ourselves in external things as opposed to depending upon the life of Christ within.
we fear failure because we have a misplaced dependency upon “success” for value and worth.
we fear rejection because we have a misplaced dependency upon other’s opinions of us for acceptance.
we fear financial loss because we have a misplaced dependency upon money for security.
we fear abandonment because we have a misplaced dependency upon significant others for love.
we fear God because we have a misplaced dependency upon a false God who measures his favor and blessing in our life against our performance.
we fear aging or physical setbacks because we have a misplaced dependency on our physical appearance for worth and acceptance.
we fear honesty because we have a misplaced dependency on an image of having it all together for a sense of identity.
we fear being a nobody because we have a misplaced dependency upon being a somebody for a sense of purpose and meaning and value.
we fear…
Christ says, “I AM the bread of Life.” in other words, Christ’s Life which dwells within us, is the Bread that fills and maintains our need and desire for identity, purpose, love, identity, acceptance, life, worth, security, meaning, value, happiness, etc…
we seek all of this outside ourselves, and yet it is fully available in every moment inside of us through the life of Christ - “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” so, we walk in dependency upon the Bread of Christ within us.

Solomon

We began a study of Ecclesiastes this past Sunday. Solomon what a dude!!!! What do you think about this guy. O0ps! wrong Solomon, well you get the idea.
brothers-solomon.jpg

Solomon is King David’s son.
Because of God’s love for David and for his son Solomon, God came to Solomon in a dream and told Solomon to ask for any blessing and He would give it to Him.
Solomon wanted to lead God’s people and be a good king so he asked God for wisdom to lead.
God grated wisdom and because he didn’t ask for fame, or power, or money, God gave him those.
Solomon was brilliant, he wrote 3 books of the bible; Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes.
He is considered the wisest man that has ever lived, and perhaps is the richest that has ever lived.
He had a fleet of ships that would bring gold to him every day from far off lands.
He had thousands of servants, tremendous amounts of land, and was a genius. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines.
What in the world would a man with 700 wives need with 300 concubines?
Solomon married a woman that God had forbid so that he would gain favor from different nations and because of their worship of a foreign, non-existent God, Solomons eyes were taken off the Lord and instead placed upon himself and his own wants and desires.

I crave?

Think with me a bit today. If you were to answer the question,

“I crave of…,” and then communicate you thoughts. What might you say? What do you crave? It seems to be a risky question, however cravings are a natural part of all humanity going all the way back to the garden.

May God continue to shape us into his image for the sake of others.

napoleonThis morning I had the opportunity to join alongside 15 others to read scripture and converse with God about life as a servant, a life that is so shaped to be about others..a life that is free from the demands of self..a life that is about God. It is good to do life with others. Jesus calls men to give their lives to something greater than themselves, this is the good news.
1 Corinthians 9:19-23 (The Message) Even though I am free of the demands and expectations of everyone, I have voluntarily become a servant to any and all in order to reach a wide range of people: religious, nonreligious, meticulous moralists, loose-living immoralists, the defeated, the demoralized whoever. I didn’t take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ but I entered their world and tried to experience things from their point of view. I’ve become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life. I did all this because of the Message. I didn’t just want to talk about it; I wanted to be in on it!

My reading and study has driven me to read from Jim Henderson this week. Jim’s writing and service can be see at www.off-the-map.org

Jim Henderson defines an OA What is an “Ordinary Attempt?

Ordinary Attempts are stories chronicling a very non-traditional approach to evangelism, ordinary activities that you are already doing. Not a program, pitch or presentation, but a simple shift in how we view the people formerly known as lost.

OAs were born out of a desire to redefine evangelism, to make it doable for ordinary people. OAs are an attempt to nudge people across the starting line toward Jesus. There is no such thing as pre-evangelism. Therefore OA s are evangelism at the purest level.

This belief is based on what Jesus said “If you give a cup of cold water to a little child because you are my disciple you won’t lose your reward. Matthew 10:42. Our cultures equivalent of a cup of cold water is attention. OAs are free attention giveaways.God counts, notices and works with our smallest efforts (including praying behind peoples back or even noticing them) to carry people along toward himself.

OA s have been borrowed by others who don’t care about the evangelism but simply want to participate in free attention giveaways and intentional acts of kindness in order to make the world a better place or someones day a bit brighter. We welcome this practice as well and don’t see any conflict of interest regardless of what motivates people to OA it is better than not OAing.

What caused you to start thinking about?

Traditional evangelism isn’t doable. I wanted to find a way to make evangelism a normal part of my life a spiritual practice that was simple, memorable and didn’t require money, training a group activity or scripture memorization.

Give us an example of a time when you saw the value of OAs.Whenever I read your stories or Randys stories. When I sat in Randys Doable Evangelism class and heard a woman talk about“noticing someone and the group clapped for her. That is Jesus sized ministry.

How would you respond to this? - a nice idea but not the way the Bible tells us to share our faith.

They have read the script (actually only part of the script) but they definitely have not watched the movie. No need for much bible exegesis here. Simply watch Jesus life as if you were watching a movie and notice the number of “conversations he has (122 for those who are counting) and notice that only 8 of them were in the Temple .Pay attention the his small interactions and notice what he doesn’t do. Also notice that he lived and ordinary life for 30 years before going public in order to send a message to all of us ordinary types that having an ordinary life works for him. He only gave 10% of his time here on earth away to what we would call ministry- a standard most of us could aspire to even with day jobs.

What have you seen happening in churches whose members have started doing OAs?

fall birthdays!

drummergirls.jpg McKenna & Story the birthday girls

shhh! You must be very quiet. You can’t share this birthday conversation with the Morgan girls. You see this fall brings on the birthdays of Story and Mckenna. Story will be 5 and McKenna will be 9.Here is the dilemma–What to get these young girls for their birthday?

What do they want, you might ask. Of course they have shared their wishes.. and on the top of the list for Story — she wants a digital camera, while McKenna would like an I-pod.

What’s a dad to do?
